9 Simple Ideas to Motivate your Students. Have you tried them?

Most High achiever students aren’t good learners by nature, but received the right motivation either at home or school. Motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is one of the powerful determinants of students’ success, and teachers can play an essential role in stimulating that motivation in their students. It is definitely challenging and effort demanding to keep all your class on track, and get them excited in learning. However, effective teachers are the ones who can transform this challenge into a strong desire for learning and trying out new motivation techniques in their classes. In this regard, I have come up with the following techniques of motivation which I found worth trying with your students:

1 – Put your students in the driver’s seat

When a student feels over-controlled in the classroom, they can lose the interest in learning. One of the effective strategies to keep the students engaged is allowing them to have control over their own learning process. For instance, allow your class to pick their topic when you assign a project, or choose their extracurricular activities.

2- Share your passion for teaching:

It’s quite simple. When you show your sincere joy and enthusiasm about teaching, the students will be excited about learning.

3- Recognize and celebrate achievements:

Your student can get demotivated when they feel like doing their best but don’t receive any recognition from you. That’s why, it’s very crucial to recognize and hail your student’s achievements no matter how small they seem to be. Teacher’s continuous positive feedback and reinforcement to their students keep them motivated to learn.

4- Make learning fun through games:

Nobody can deny that using games is one of the powerful tools that keep students highly motivated. Game-based activities keep your students actively engaged, and their minds experience the joy of learning. Your subject-related games often effectively improve the students’ level rather than the regular exercises.

5- Find strengths and focus on them:

Sometimes, it’s really challenging to focus on strengths of a student when they are struggling with your subject. However, No matter how their level is, often try to find a point of strength in your student and focus on it. Focusing on strengths is considered one of the most fruitful methods of motivation.

6- State the objectives from the very beginning :

Another form of motivation is defining the objectives of your lessons, or even the entire course from the very beginning. Have your students know what is expected of them so that to stay engaged.

7- Allocate responsibilities to your students:

Assigning your students some classroom jobs is an outstanding way to build a positive rapport with them. Most students see such responsibilities as a privilege rather than an annoying burden, because they feel valued and important.

8- Know your students not only their names:

Getting to know your students go far beyond just memorizing their names. The students get motivated to work harder when you try to know about their interests, preferences, ambitions, etc.

9- Give constructive feedback:

Giving feedback is about more than giving praising expressions. Effective feedback means to help your students find out what went wrong throughout all the task stages and how they can address the struggles they have faced.
