After getting beyond its pre-designed capacity, expansion and development projects have been launched at Med Tanger to make it the largest container port in Africa.
According to African Business magazine , the Tanger port is already handling cargo as much as Durban in South Africa. Besides this, raising the capacity of Med Tanger is no longer long-term objective, but an actual strong demand of the international markets.
In this regard, Med Tanger with the partner companies is currently developing the fourth terminal at the port. Also, according to same magazine, the partner company (APMT) has signed deals to buy 44 new cranes for the facilty.
Thus, with annual handling capacity of 5m TEU a year, Med Tanger will be by far the biggest container terminal on the African continent, more than twice the size of the largest terminal at Durban.
The magazine also mentions the role of the port in reinforcing the industry in Morocco. For instance, French care manufacturer Renault produces 250,000 vehicles a year in the country.
