Berlin — The following statement has been issued by a spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office:
Today (12 September) the Rabat Declaration on German-Moroccan relations entered into force. To mark the occasion, the Federal Foreign Office’s Regional Director for the Near and Middle East and the Maghreb will deliver a letter from Foreign Minister Westerwelle to his Moroccan counterpart, Saad Dine El Otmani, in Rabat today.
The Rabat Declaration outlines the further development of relations between Germany and Morocco. As well as strengthening economic and cultural ties, it also envisages deepening cooperation in the fields of democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights. The Declaration will also underpin political dialogue between the two Foreign Ministries and other ministries that play a role in bilateral relations.
Supporting the reform measures put forward in Morocco is an important priority for Foreign Minister Westerwelle and the Federal Government. Germany stands ready to offer expertise to assist with the institutional reforms concerning democracy, strengthening human rights and civil society.
Foreign Minister Westerwelle believes that civil society links should also be enhanced. Political foundations in particular carry out valuable work in this regard.
