The 30th of January recognized the birth of the first edition of Alumni Model United Nations in Fes city. The conference was organized by the Association of Moroccan American Dialog (AMAD) and sponsored by the US Embassy in Rabat.

Alumni Model United Nations is a conference in which participants – also called delegates – step into the shoes of ambassadors from U.N. member states to debate current issues on the organization’s vast agenda. This first edition targeted two themes separately in different stimulated UN organs; the first one is “Maintenance of International Peace and Security” which was examined in the Security Council committee while the second theme, “Eliminating Rational Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerances”, was discussed in the General assembly committee.

AMUNC was an interesting and enjoyable experience, in which we had the chance to walk in the shoes of real policy makers and diplomats, and to stimulate member states representatives of the UN. Having participated in this first edition, helped me develop many skills such as teamwork, persuasive writing, debating and negations… At the end of the conference, I enjoyed interacting with delegates, exchanging ideas with them and even contact information to remain in touch for future events”, said Amine Cholay, Teacher Trainee at ENS school In Rabat

Out of 300 applicants, the organizing committee of AMUNC selected 100 individuals to act as member states representative of UN. Delegates came from a diverse set of majors and backgrounds and shared a common interest in international relations and a motivation to spread awareness of global issues. The conference was also a platform to reunite Moroccan alumni of different US government sponsored programs with active youth to exchange experiences and create future partnerships.

“… We are really thrilled to have this astonishing group of engaged leaders who came from diverse geographical and professional backgrounds to participate in the conference; we had future doctors, future professors, and some of the delegates were already practitioners. In this process, Participants learnt a lot of skills including making speeches, negotiating with allies and adversaries, and writing draft resolution in an attempt to resolve various conflicts in this globe…”, said Fouad Touzani, AMUNC Founder and AMAD’s board member, and he added, “we are hoping that in the next edition, we will bring delegates from other countries to discuss themes from an international perspective.

At the end of the conference, most of delegates stated that they were grateful for taking part in this educational experience and they also expressed their desire to participate in similar MUN conferences in the future. AMUNC provided an enjoyable opportunity for high school and college students to gain an insight into the workings of the United Nations and the dynamics of international relations in addition to debate the issues that confront world leaders and draft resolutions in response to these global issues.

“AMNUC was a great experience and one of the best conferences I have ever attended. I learnt how to share my ideas and how to be persuasive using appropriate methods. The thing that I enjoyed the most was meeting new people with whom I created new friendships and shared knowledge” explained Souhaila Boudhan, a senior at Abdelkarim El Khatabi high school and Alumni of Access Students Program in Nador.
